Humor - Education - Performance - Dialogue

WPC 2009

A big thank you to Dr. Eddie Moore Jr. and all of the wonderful organizers and volunteers of the tenth annual White Privilege Conference held in Memphis, TN in April 2009. Being given the chance to present my workshop, "Afropuff Lederhosen: The Difference Humor Makes", to such a receptive audience is a gift I will cherish as I carry on with this work. Also, a special thank you to all of my workshop participants. The laughter, tough questions, and personal exchange affected me on a deep level. Thank you for your openess, honesty and response. I hope that this experience continues to affect you all as it has me...

Below are a selection of testimonials taken verbatim from the Workshop Evaluation Forms filed out at the conclusion of my presentation. The identifying statistics were offered by the participants and I include them here to showcase the wealth of difference brought together by the WPC and to highlight the universal appeal of humor and personal stories.

  • "Very powerful. Despite our obvious differences I heard my story of developing my own identity despite of my parents and history coming back to consciously decide what to keep. Thanx!"

  • "I appreciated the risk the presenter took in opening herself and sharing her story. It was a great example of how humor can be used to facilitate a discussion of a serious topic."
